American Idol is back and it's promising to be bigger than ever. Lionel Richie, Katy Perry and Luke Bryan scour America for the next big thing and the first episode is kicking that off in style. Whether it's contestants with attitude, shocking voices or adorable kids, this is a season premiere you won't want to miss. While nothing is different from previous seasons (except new judges), here are the highlights of the Season 16 premiere, new to ABC.

An Introduction to Your New Judges

The first thing you get is an introduction to the new judges, Richie, Perry and Bryan. They each share their thoughts about each other, with how they'll bring something unique and different to the table. After that, they'll go into the expectations for the seasons and the hopes of the things they'll see.

Just like with every previous season, we see the judges' nerves and excitement for the upcoming contestants. There are glimpses of them between the contestants, as they discuss the things they've witnessed (both good and bad.)

Not all contestants are going to get an instant yes, but the judges are certainly kind and empathetic. When it comes to turning down contestants, each judge has constructive criticism. It's always hard getting turned down, but when you have someone like Lionel Richie tell you that you're like he was before he became great, you know you have something special.

The big difference is there isn't a Simon Cowell. There is nobody there to tell the contestants like it is. All judges are respectful of the feelings of the contestants, even if that politeness doesn't happen the other way around.

Meet the New Contestants

Don't expect to guess how people will sound singing when you see their introductions. One contestant is one of the most energetic and awkward individuals to appear on the series, but definitely has a voice that will impress. On top of that, she'll share her own song, instead of doing the usual cover of her idol.

Sometimes contestants are turned away but the judges realize they have made a mistake. This is certainly nothing new to the series, but it's not often it happens in the American Idol season premiere.

Of course, there are also the contestants who don't get their golden ticket and have the attitude afterward. Watch out for an excellent Broadway potential who doesn't quite understand the reason she's being told no.

Expect the shock contestants. While there are a few who will make you laugh and entertain you, there's a specific one who has a voice you definitely don't expect looking at him. This will be the guy to watch for the rest of the season, as long as he stays on form.

The Highlights of the Episode

One of the big highlights is more contestants singing original songs. Many of the contestants don't want to just be carbon copies of their idols, but want to show off their songwriting talents too. Sometimes the originals don't quite hit the mark, but if you love the original music on the likes of Nashville and Empire, the original compositions are certainly going to be your highlight.

There's also an adorable moment when a young girl called Dixie meets the judges. While she's too young to actually audition, nobody could say no to this young starlet. If only there wasn't an age limit. This girl would steal the show entirely. You need to watch and listen to understand.

Every contestant has something that they'd love to get out of their win, and this American Idol premiere has to have one of the strangest wishes. Even the judges can't quite understand if the contestant is being serious or not.
