The CW isn't known for being a major player at awards shows, but one drama received a major honor at one of this year's technical guilds. The Originals is nominated for an ASC Award, courtesy of the American Society of Cinematographers.

The cinematography awards are split into two categories, one for commercial TV and the other for non-commercial TV (the latter being for streaming services and premium cable like HBO, Showtime and Starz). The Originals will compete against the pilot of FX's Legion, two episodes of Syfy's 12 Monkeys and an episode of FOX's Gotham, a show which has been nominated by the ASC for four years in a row.

While the CW has only earned one Emmy nomination for Cinematography (for Everybody Hates Chris), the ASC has been generous to the smaller broadcast network. Beauty and the Beast and Nikita are both past nominees, and Smallville earned seven total nominations and two wins during its run.

As for non-commercial TV, Game of Thrones is now at a total of 10 ASC nominations, with two more for season 7. It will compete against Netflix's The Crown, Amazon's The Man in the High Castle and Starz' Outlander.

There's also a category for TV movies, miniseries and TV pilots, with a strange mix of Netflix's Mindhunter, CBS' Training Day, Nat Geo's Genius, HBO's The Deuce and a Lifetime original movie. It's odd that the pilot for Legion isn't nominated in this category instead of competing with The Originals.
