It seems every few seasons So You Think You Can Dance
not only has guest judges, but it also welcomes new permanent judges for the entire season. Nigel Lythgoe has been a judge throughout the series, with a rotating mix of dancers, choreographers and entertainers. And each of the judges always brings something different to the table for the contestants. Season 14 welcomes back Mary Murphy and introduces new judge and actress Vanessa Hudgens. And while I'm not a huge fan of Vanessa's, I do think she's bringing positivity and enthusiasm to this season.
Which Style of Dance Does Best on So You Think You Can Dance?>>>
Vanessa Hudgens is probably known to most from her Disney days in High School Musical.
Since then she's been in a bunch of movies and released a couple albums. Most recently, she played Rizzo in Grease: Live
in 2016. I think her background in theater will bring a lot to the table as a judge this season on So You Think You Can Dance
. However, I hope she can really learn to critique the contestants as the live shows start. Since season 14 is still in the audition and academy portions of the show, I'll be curious to see what Vanessa says during the performances.
Young and Positive
Having Vanessa on the show brings a younger face to the judges' table. In season 13, Jason Derulo and Maddie Ziegler brought that youthfulness, and experience, to the table. So I imagine Vanessa will have no problem filling those shoes.
I would like to see her banter more with Nigel and Mary. I'm assuming this will come in time, as by the third week of auditions, the three judges are joking around with each other.
Falling into Good
I fear that Vanessa will fall into the "too nice" category. Being a judge on any competition show has got to be hard. I imagine it's hard to find that fine line between being mean and giving constructive criticism. I hope that Vanessa is able to really critique the performances and give her honest opinion instead of loving each one.
I hope she can get emotional too. Mary is usually the emotional one, but I could see Vanessa getting emotional too. When a performer can bring tears to a judge's eyes, it's almost as if they don't even have to give their opinion -- the tears say it all.
I think that as long as Vanessa can remain real and bring her Broadway and performing experiences to So You Think You Can Dance
, she'll be a good addition to season 14. If she always remains cheery and only doles out positive critiques, it really won't be an interesting season.
