A nephilim. An abomination. The literal spawn of Satan. Supernatural’s Jack has racked up a host of sobriquets over the course of his short life, and it will be up to the Winchesters to ensure Lucifer’s son remains a monster in name only.

Jack’s (Alexander Calvert) mother is dead and his father’s on a hunting trip in an alternate dimension, leaving the nephilim as wayward as any of Supernatural‘s sons. His childhood went by in a blink of an eye, played out in his nursery as Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) watched Castiel’s (Misha Collins) prone body fall to the ground. Now a teenager, Jack doesn’t know up from down or, more importantly, wrong from right.

“He had an evil source, but he’s a blank slate. It’s a nature-nurture thing,” Andrew Dabb, showrunner, told TV Guide Magazine for their San Diego Comic-Con 2017 special edition. “If season 12 was about children coming to terms with their moms as adults, then season 13 is very much about Sam and Dean as parents.”

The Winchester brothers certainly won’t don the mantle of fatherhood with alacrity, but their perspective will change as time wears on.

“Neither would have willingly brought a child into this life, but once they see him as a person and not a tool, bonds will form,” Dabb explained. “Though what do you do when he can tear down a mountain or rip a hole in the universe with the click of his fingers? He’s a walking, talking nuke. Whoever controls him controls a lot.”

Over the years, Sam and Dean have learned (and relearned) that not every monster should be put down as a matter of course. They allowed the devil’s offspring to come into being under the presumption that they could take away his angelic grace, thus neutralizing his powers. Jack is essentially the key to opening inter-dimensional rifts, however, meaning his predilection for cosmic manipulation is the only hope the boys have for seeing their mother once more. Being in loco parentis will give rise to a delicate balance — can the Winchesters put their own desires over the fate of the world? Over Jack’s own murky future as either the Darth Vader or Luke Skywalker of the Supernatural world?
