Supernatural offered a pretty big cliffhanger in its Winter finale, with Sam and Dean stranded in an alternate universe, possibly one that includes dinosaurs. But the Winchesters don't have anything to worry about, because an epic team of women is coming along to save them.

The CW released the full episode synopsis for the mid-season premiere, "Wayward Sisters," which also serves as a backdoor pilot for a potential spin-off of the same name centered around Sheriff Jody Mills and her surrogate family of female Hunters. The synopsis offers a detailed look at how Jody's new family comes together on a mission to save Sam and Dean.

From the CW: "When Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) go missing, Jody Mills (Kim Rhodes) calls Claire Novak (guest star Kathryn Newton), the rebellious rogue hunter, and tells her it is time to come home - they need to find the Winchesters. Claire returns and reunites with Alex Jones (guest star Katherine Ramdeen), who has stayed behind with Jody and tries to balance a "normal" life with being a part-time hunter. While Jody is happy to have Claire home again, she's plagued by Patience's (guest star Clark Backo) disturbing vision involving her adopted daughter. Claire and Alex search for Kaia Nieves (guest star Yadira Guevara-Prip), the dreamcatcher responsible for opening the rift that Sam and Dean went through, as she holds the key to their whereabouts. Jody calls her friend, Donna Hanscum (guest star Briana Buckmaster), to round out the team and the women head off on the most important hunt of their lives."

5 Things Supernatural Is Missing in Season 13>>>

It's easy to see some basic parallels between "Wayward Sisters" and the origins of Supernatural. Jody is a more involved John Winchester, the parent in charge of everything. Claire, the daughter of Castiel's vessel, seems to be filling the Dean role, a rebellious bad-ass who just wants to be a Hunter. Alex is the Sam, someone with her feet in both worlds, trying to balance being a Hunter with having a normal life. That makes Sheriff Donna the Bobby, the fun aunt.

The two new characters add more of a supernatural element to this group. Patience's psychic vision from the Winter finale that brought her to Jody seems to involve Claire, which could be a way to kick-start a deeper mythology for the new series. And obviously the group needs to find Kaia in order to save Sam and Dean, and her powers should come in handy.

Why Supernatural Needs to Embrace Its New Multiverse>>>

The synopsis definitely makes it sound like the Winter premiere will include very little of Sam and Dean as the primary focus will be on the female Hunters trying to save them. Trapping the brothers in an alternate world is a great way to really let Jody and her fellow female Hunters take center stage, allowing viewers to see what a spin-off without the Winchesters would look like.
