Little does Dean realize that doing something so normal as setting up a dating app profile is going to land him and Sam in the middle of a hunt involving demons and witches, and being face-to-face with someone familiar who’s back for revenge. A lot goes down in this week’s episode of Supernatural, “Girls, Girls, Girls,” and it ends with the “mother” of a reveal.

Meanwhile, Hannah runs into someone from her vessel’s life, which complicates things for her and Castiel and their mission. It ends with her making a decision and reminds Castiel of poor Jimmy Novak and his family.

So Much for Online Dating?

“We detoured eight hours so you could get laid?” Sam asks, and the answer to that question is yes. Yes, they detoured eight hours so Dean could hook up with Shaylene, with whom he’s been exchanging some raunchy messages on a dating app. However, before things can get too hot and heavy between them, she wants to discuss payment, and she doesn’t mean money. She wants his soul.

“It’s nothing,” she tells him, but that’s because she doesn’t know who he is. Her demon pimp does, however, when Sam and Dean surprise him when he shows up expecting some poor sap ready to sign over his soul. One too many insults Shaylene’s way, and she kills the demon.

Rowena Shows What She Can Do

While Sam and Dean do have a business card for “Raul’s Girls” from the demon’s pocket, Rowena gets to Raul first, and while he mistakes her for an applicant or a client, she quickly corrects him. “No disrespect to your girls, but I’d sooner die than do business of any kind with filth like you,” she explains before killing Raul while another demon smokes out.

“Hardly the most appetizing process in the world, but killing demons always makes me hungry,” she says and takes the girls with her to a fancy restaurant, where the waiter tries to kick the hookers out, only for Rowena to use a hex bag to charm them everything they want and then boil his brains, as witches do. I have to say, I like Rowena as the new villain.

While Sam finds the spell that Rowena used — one that hasn’t been used in over 300 years and has only ever been used by the witch who created it (yes, you guessed it, Rowena) — the witch gives the girls a quick Witches 101 lesson and tells them that she’s been on the run from the Grand Coven ever since they called her magic “too extreme” and forbade her from using it. She agrees to take them on as her students, and Sam and Dean track her down after reaching out to the hunters’ network and learning about similar boiled brains cases in swanky hotels.

Demons have also found Rowena and the girls, and after Dean kills both, the witch does an “attack dog spell” on one of the girls to distract the hunters. She tries to give the other girl the typical “she was weak, you’re strong” speech, but the hooker punches her and leaves, with Dean stepping in before Rowena can stop her. The only problem? Cole then shows up and forces Dean to let the witch go because he doesn’t care what she is; he just wants revenge.

Let It Go, Cole

Cole captures himself a demon to torture by splashing holy water on him to get information about Dean because he didn’t get the memo that Dean’s no longer a demon. Dean tries to apologize and explain, but Cole still splashes him with holy water. While that has no effect, Cole thinks he’s still a monster because he killed his father, and the fight begins. It’s a pretty impressive fight, and when Dean finally gets the advantage for good, he tells Cole to give him five minutes and then if he still wants to kill him, go for it. He even gives him his gun.

Dean explains that he was working a case involving three people killed, their livers ripped out and eaten — by Cole’s father. He tracked him back to his house, and he likely saved Cole or his mother from being another victim. Cole argues that he heard his father begging him to stop, but Dean explains that his father was already gone. Then Sam joins the party, and Dean has to get both him and Cole to lower their guns.

For Cole, it’s not so easy to just forget after he spent his whole life looking for the man who killed his father. Dean gets it. “Those stories that we tell that keep us going, sometimes they blind us. They take us to dark places, the kind of place where I might beat the crap out of a good man just for the fun of it,” he tells him. “The people who love me, they pulled me back from that edge. Cole, once you touch that darkness, it never goes away. Now the truth is, I’m past saving. I know how my story ends. It’s at the edge of a blade or the barrel of a gun.” Sam reminds Cole about his family; they need him to come home whole. And so Cole is going home. I don’t particularly care for Cole, but I do care for Cole in terms of what he means for Dean and that speech of his.

But what about Dean? Is Dean past saving? Does he believe that? When Sam questions him about it later, Dean says he was just telling Cole what he needed to hear, but does Sam believe that? I don’t.

10 Supernatural Characters Who Need to Return >>>

Crowley’s Problems in Hell

It’s not easy being the King of Hell. First, Crowley finds out that demons set up a whorehouse in his name to get him souls after numbers were down after the war with Abaddon. “So you and your half-wit pal threw me into the sex trade? I’m evil, but that’s just tacky.” Apparently, they tried to run it past him, but he wasn’t taking meetings because he was “distracted”; oops, no, “busy.”

Then the beta team brings Rowena to hell after capturing her on the perimeter (thanks, Cole, for distracting the Winchesters), and there she is, in a cell, chained up, bruised and bloody. She takes great pleasure out of mocking Crowley while he just stares at her, finally uttering one word: “Mother?” Yes, Rowena is Crowley’s mother. It’s not terribly surprising, but I have a feeling it’s going to make for some really great scenes.

Feelings of Humanity

Castiel and Hannah’s mission to find angels comes to a complete standstill when her vessel, Caroline’s husband Joe, finds her after he tracked her credit card and saw the charge for the motel room. Hannah tries to get Joe to leave by claiming she left him for Castiel after telling him he wouldn’t understand gets her nowhere. “This guy?” Joe asks in disbelief, and to prove it, she kisses Castiel in front of him. How he believes that they’ve been carrying on an affair after that kiss is beyond me, considering the expressions on their faces.

Castiel tells Hannah she did the right thing to help Joe move forward and tells her about taking his vessel, Jimmy Novak, from his family twice. He was a good man, but “it was difficult, but necessary,” he explains. “The mission comes first, always.” That’s not true for Hannah, who skips off to do some thinking, and when Castiel finds her, she tells him she’s done. “We always said the humans were our original mission,” she says. “Maybe it’s time, Castiel. Time to put them first.”

She has begun to feel human things — passions, hungers, the urge to shower, to get closer to him — but when she saw Joe, Caroline was inside screaming for him and her life back. She decides to step aside and lets Caroline return home to Joe, who welcomes her with open arms. I guess she has an explanation for the “cheating”?

After watching Caroline return to Joe, Castiel (presumably) steals Wi-Fi from some house in the neighborhood to do a search for Jimmy Novak, and one of the first results is a Missing photo. This is obviously setting up episode nine, “The Things We Left Behind,” which will see Claire Novak’s return.

Supernatural season 10 airs Tuesdays at 9pm on The CW.
