ABC is going back to the '90s, or ahead to the '90s depending on how you look at it. The network has officially ordered a spin-off to popular sitcom The Goldbergs. The new series will air in the 2018-2019 TV season.

ABC Sets Spring 2018 Finale Dates>>>

While The Goldbergs is set in the 1980s, the spin-off will jump ahead to the '90s and center on the teachers of the high school featured in the original series. The new show will star A.J. Michalka, reprising her Goldbergs role as Barry's ex-girlfriend Lainey Lewis, now older and presumably a teacher.

The show will also star two other Goldbergs regular recurring characters, Tim Meadows as Mr. Glascott (now the principal) and Bryan Callen Mr. Mellor, the gym teacher.

ABC Renews Roseanne Revival for Season 2>>>

The spin-off was developed for last year, but ABC passed on it. The original pilot for the spin-off aired in January as a special episode of The Goldbergs. The new spin-off has been retooled.

With the success of revivals, reboots and spin-offs like Roseanne, Will and Grace, Young Sheldon and the upcoming Murphy Brown, ABC is sticking to the recent trend for sitcoms. ABC has already renewed The Goldbergs, Modern Family and Roseanne for the 2018-2019 TV season as well.

What other characters would you like to see on the spin-off? The Goldbergs airs Wednesdays at 8/7c on ABC. For more TV news, like BuddyTV's Facebook page.
