Idols are a dime a dozen, but a mentor can sometimes be hard to come by. Even though 2018 is fast approaching, there is still time to look back at some beloved television characters that one may aspire to be like in the new year. For every zodiac sign, there is a corresponding character that you might know, or you might want to know, to help boost your life by this time next December.
Beware of possible spoilers ahead!
Aries (March 21 - April 19) - Frank Castle, The Punisher
The Warrior. This much-anticipated closer look at the life of an anti-hero, The Punisher, gave viewers a different look into the world of Marvel thanks to the heavy-hitting Netflix. Frank Castle is rugged, stubborn, hot-headed and passionate. He's a ball of boiling lava, waiting to erupt at any given moment. Sound familiar, Aries?
As the first sign of the zodiac, an Aries is a hard-headed leader. Castle is by no means your typical hero, seeking out the bad guys to protect all mankind, but he fights for his beliefs in his own way and he makes no apologies. I wouldn't advise that you find yourself armed with various weapons, taking down all who cross your path, but keep the fight alive.
Taurus (April 20 - May 20) - Kermit the Frog, The Muppets
The Realist. This year, we have seen an unsettling outpour of cases involving sexual misconduct in the workplace. Whether these figures are in the public eye via politics, sports, entertainment, etc. it strikes a cord in all of us and our society is holding those accountable for their actions. I know what you're thinking. Kermit is a Muppet. How can a Muppet hold any relation to such a serious and real topic? Think about it.
When Miss Piggy throws herself at her green counterpart wherever and whenever she sees fit, anyone can see the parallels. Kermit, whose new voice is also product of misconduct in the workplace
, finds himself in an uncomfortable situation (you have all seen the many memes by now expressing his inner thoughts by that infamous frown) as she harasses him in that flamboyant and over-the-top manner that we all chuckle at. Yet, every time Kermit keeps his cool, collects himself and brings it back to the practical plan. If only everyone took the time to sit and think WWKD (What Would Kermit Do?) before acting on impulse, the world just might be a less offensive place.
Gemini (May 21 - Junes 20) - Theon Greyjoy, Game of Thrones
The Dualist. As the seasons have passed, Theon has shown two very opposing sides to his personality. Fans first saw him as the jerk who used every opportunity to remind Jon Snow of being the Stark bastard child. He stomped around as though he were entitled to things he had no claim to. After Ramsay stripped him of his manhood, literally, we were introduced to "Reek," Theon's less than manly persona.
The modern day Gemini can use Theon as a cautionary tale. If you come to find yourself in a life or death situation where you are your loved one's only hope for survival, do the right thing and go down with a fight. Running away like a scared and meme-worthy mouse just might land you on a list of people to never trust with one's life. Let's hope that the upcoming final season of Game of Thrones will find Theon in a better light.
Cancer (June 21 - July 22) - Olivia Pope, Scandal
The Independent. As Scandal nears its end in 2018, Olivia Pope just might live on by leaving behind a legacy to inspire fellow Cancers. Her hardworking, heels-to-the-pavement attitude has proven to be a successful tactic as one of, if not the, most powerful women in Washington, D.C. Seeing such a strong, independent female character in the forefront of a major primetime television show for seven season is just another notch on creator Shonda Rimes' expanding belt.
While Olivia's romantic life plays an intrical part in her decisions, or lack thereof at times, showing how feelings and emotions can sway a Cancer's mood, the central focus remains. Take this example as one of positivity or caution. Strive to be in her position of power or see to it that you aren't caught in the emotional wreck of such a high-stake love triangle. Either way, Cancer, your 2018 should be quite the event!
Leo (July 23 - August 22) - Tasha "Taystee" Jefferson, Orange is the New Black
The Loyalist. Season 5 of Orange is the New Black tossed viewers into the middle of an eruption of emotions as season 4 ended with the death of Poussey, Taystee's best friend. In the wake of real societal chaos, involving fatal encounters with the law, the Netflix hit took the opportunity to shine light on grief. Danielle Brooks gives a powerful performance as Taystee campaigns for her friend's name and memory to be remembered properly.
As a Leo, you hold your friends close. Taystee portrays loyalty to a T. Her personal growth shines as chaos erupts within the prison and her love for Poussey never falters. This lit fire can only stand as a positive transformation in Taystee that viewers can look forward to seeing in seasons to come.
Virgo (August 23 - September 22) - Kate Pearson, This Is Us
The Perfectionist. The second installment of a trilogy of recent episodes, chronicaling the lives of The Big Three one by one, follows Kate and her journey through pregnancy. Fans were shocked to learn of her emotional miscarriage and the grieving process that follows. Actress Chrissy Metz has explained her character's desire for the appearance of perfection
and initial decision to keep the news from her mother, who is the source of Kate's need to be flawless.
As the "Number Two" episode carries on, it's quickly apparent that she needs the love and shoulder of her fiance Toby (Chris Sullivan.) The second half of this second season is sure to showcase even more growth from Kate as she learns to let loose and realize that life throws us curveballs. Take this note from Kate. Be the best you in 2018, but keep in mind that failures can prove to be great lessons.
Libra (September 23 - October 22) - Carrie Bradshaw, Sex & The City
The Social Butterfly. The highly popular HBO romantic comedy-drama is long gone from today's TV guides, but the ideals these women upheld and promoted are still very much alive. Pack leader Carrie Bradshaw had a voice. As show narrator and writer for the fictitious New York Star, Carrie spoke in every way possible, be it her written words, her fashion sense or the conventional sense of the word. This was not a woman to be put in a box.
Many can learn or see themselves in a character like Carrie. Social media has taken over and everyone has a voice. This may or may not always prove to be a positive, but speaking up on what you believe or voicing your opinions and not backing down is what matters. Carrie put herself out there every chance she had. She sometimes got knocked down for it, but she learned and had her support system there to help. Women, and men, should be encouraged to step outside the comfort zone in the new year and see where risk takes you.
Scorpio (October 23 - November 21) - Santana Lopez, Glee
The Passionate. Oh, Scorpio. So misunderstood. As a cheerleader at Carmel High, Glee's Santana was the quintessential mean girl for what looked to be no real reason at all. It wasn't until more character development and a relationship with fellow glee club member Brittany Pierce that viewers began to see the underlying reasons to Santana's disjointed actions. She simply had more feelings than she knew how to handle.
Santana was able to understand her feelings, come to terms with her sexuality and grow as an individual who can better interact with those around her. Be like Santana, not so much the actress who portrayed her for six seasons. Just this year, Naya Rivera, known for various altercations with cast members on the set of Glee
, made headlines with an arrest for domestic battery against husband Ryan Dorsey
. So manage your emotions well in 2018 and save yourself the public humiliation.
Sagittarius (November 22 - December 21) - Kimmy Schmidt, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
The Optimist. As a new year approaches, it's always good to have a positive outlook on what lies ahead. Believing that 2017 is old news, in the past and 2018 will bring bigger and better things as long as Sagittarius keeps their chin up and explores what piques their interests. Kimmy embodies this ideal perfectly.
After being abducted and hidden in an underground bunker for years, Kimmy saw her escape as a new beginning with new opportunities and newfound friends. Her personality just goes to show that a little optimism, curiosity and hard-work can go a long way. Don't be afraid to get out there and try something new each day!
Capricorn (December 22 - January 19) - Buffy Anne Summers, Buffy the Vampire Slayer
The Disciplined. Buffy may have fought literal demons, but her war with them greatly parallels that of the realistic "demons" women, youth, we as a society face today. From bullies to sexual predators, and even unequal pay between the sexes, our demons may look different than the fictional monsters killed with a stake through the heart, but the similarities in the danger they bring is almost uncanny.
Buffy, although young, never faltered from the main goal, to protect and eliminate threats. Women have especially banded together as of late to attack the long-lasting opposition and see to it that the ultimate goal grants safety, equality and a light at the end of the tunnel.
Aquarius (January 20 - February 18) - Lieutenant Olivia Benson, Law & Order: SVU
A recent episode called for Lt. Benson to draw from her past experiences involving a woman who was raped. In order to draw necessary information from the victim, Olivia was forced to relive her own haunting memories. It is an unfortunate way to move forward for the betterment of those around you, but many women have come forward in today's society doing just that. Predators have been brought to light thanks to real life Olivia Bensons. Her career has reached new heights over the years and her morals remain intact.
Pisces (February 19 - March 20) - Issa Dee, Insecure
The Empath. Actress, writer, director and web series creator Issa Rae is a fast emerging mogul who has struck gold with hit HBO show Insecure
and is currently developing two new shows
for their roster. The first time Golden Globe nominee will return next year with season 3 of main character Issa Dee's interesting and usually hilarious narrative of dating after losing her mediocre relationship to infidelity.
Issa's personal life might be flipping and flopping from one place to the next, but her professional life is clearly one of a Pisces. She lives to help others, working with a non-profit organization which benefits middle school youth in California. Things may get tricky at times, but her main purpose remains the same. Issa's passion is her work with these kids. Perhaps the upcoming third season will find Issa mirroring her personal life to better align with her profesional one in hopes of seeing as much success as the woman who portrays her.
